Peanut Butter Banana Dog Treats

peanut butter banana dog treats | GIRLS WHO EAT

These dog treats are the perfect excuse to use up overly ripe bananas. I know these treats are delicious because I have one of the pickiest dogs – yes she is a food snob – and she went crazy for these (it took me four attempts to get these rights that should tell you just how picky she is)!  It’s easy to make these and you get over 30 treats. These use only 4 simple ingredients and can be stored in a sealed container or bag for up to 2 weeks!

For this recipe, you need:

  • Banana: To make this recipe, use a very ripe banana (skin is turning brown) that can mash well
  • Peanut Butter: I prefer to use crunchy PB over creamy, but it is really up to you and what you have in your pantry! Make absolutely sure that your peanut butter label says JUST peanuts and has no xylitol or other ingredients in it
  • Oat Flour: you can either use store bought oat flour (which I did for this recipe) or you can take rolled oats and place them in the food processor and blend until a flour forms. If you make your own oat flour, it does tend to be a bit thicker than store bought oat flour, so you will want to start with 1 ½ cups for the recipe before adding any additional flour. Oats are a great source of fiber and protein for dogs
  • Cinnamon: this is an optional ingredient, but can help regulate a dog’s blood sugar. I only added a little sprinkle
  • Eggs: I like to use pasture raised eggs like Vital Farms. I would keep an eye on the egg label and make sure there are no added hormones and that the eggs are ideally cage free

Tips:

  • having a cookie cutter is optional. I bought this one from Amazon, which is in the shape of a dog bone!
  • You can easily roll out the dough and use a 1 tbsp measuring spoon to make circle cookies instead. Any shape should work – just keep them all consistent and to about 1 tbsp for each
  • It’s always best to consult with your vet for allergies or food sensitives

How to Store:

Make sure to store the treats in an airtight sealed container at room temperature. My preference is a glass container because I find with the right ones, these last longer (over a week).

Cooking & Baking Supplies

  • Dog Cookie Cutter
  • Baking Tray
  • Parchment Paper

Ingredients

  • 1 banana, ripe
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup crunchy or creamy peanut butter
  • 1 3/4 cup oat flour
  • sprinkle of cinnamon

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  • In a large mixing bowl, mash banana well, then mix in the egg and peanut butter until it’s a smooth consistency.
  • Add in a sprinkle of cinnamon and the oat flour. If you’re using homemade oat flour made from ground up oats, use 1½ cups as it is a thicker consistency than store bought oat flour.
  • Use your hands to knead flour into the dough. The dough should not be sticky. If it is, add in more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time.
  • Roll the dough into a large ball and place on a flat surface on top of a piece of parchment paper.
  • Roll out the dough using a rolling pin until it is about ½ inch thick. Use your cookie cutter to cut out each cookie and place them on your baking tray lined with parchment paper. These can be placed close together since they do not rise or expand when baked.
  • Once you have cut out as many cookies as possible, take the leftover dough, knead it a bit and roll it out again and make more cookies. Do this until all of the dough is used up. Bake your treats for 15-18 minutes (until the base becomes a golden brown) on the bottom rack of your oven.
  • Remove from the oven and let cool. Then give to your pups to ENJOY!
