tomato sauce | GIRLS WHO EAT

There is something so delicious about homemade tomato sauce and it’s so easy! Just throw everything in a pot, bring to a boil, and let simmer. This sauce is so much better than so many packaged options and only used 8 ingredients with a majority being pantry staple spices!

What you will need for this recipe:

  • Large Pot
  • Blender or Immersion Blender
  • Whole Peeled Tomatoes (can): I like to check the ingredient label for this product to make sure it’s clean. Watch out for any added sugar.  You can also use fresh tomatoes instead of canned, I would estimate about 10 Roma tomatoes (2lbs worth)
  • Garlic
  • Italian Seasoning
  • Salt
  • Fresh Basil: You can use 1 tsp of dried basil instead of fresh
  • Olive Oil
  • Pepper
  • Red Pepper Flakes: This makes the sauce spicy but you can omit this ingredient if you prefer a more mild taste

How to Store:

  • Store in a sealed airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week!

Vegan Zucchini Roll-Ups

Chickpea Shakshuka

Vegan Eggplant Parm

Ingredients

  • 28oz can whole peeled tomatoes
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • sprinkle of pepper
  • sprinkle of red pepper flakes

Instructions

  • Add all of the ingredients to a medium pot.
  • When the tomatoes start to soften, after about 4-5 minutes, mash them with a fork.
  • Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for 20 minutes.
  • Mash the tomatoes again with a fork or potato masher.
  • Use an immersion blender to blend sauce ingredients. If you don’t have an immersion blender, let the sauce cool and then use a blender or food processor to make the sauce. Pulse until it gets smoother with some chunks. ENJOY!
