Make Your Own Homemade Cough Syrup

homemade cough syrup | GIRLS WHO EAT

If you’ve ever taken the time to actually look at the ingredients in store bought cough syrup, you’d be amazed at the ingredients – dyes, artificial sweeteners, and tons of preservatives and fillers.  You can certainly find clean versions of cough support, and as well as cold support but we also wanted to make a clean version cough syrup of our own with immune boosting, antioxidant rich, and nutrient dense ingredients.  You can store it in the fridge for two weeks or freeze it in small batches and take it out when you need it.  The ingredients in this mixture serve different purposes to help speed up healing.  Apple cider vinegar slows down mucus, lemon is full of vitamin C, ginger is an anti-inflammatory and relieves congestion, honey will soothe your throat and the cayenne pepper works as a pain reliever.  Sip this syrup by the spoonful every couple of hours to feel the full benefits and hopefully your cold will go away quickly.

For this recipe, you will need:

  • Cayenne Pepper: ideally this is organic as peppers are part of the dirty dozen list
  • Ginger: fresh ginger is great for the immune system
  • Cinnamon
  • Honey: local or raw honey are my first choices and you can usually find them at your farmer’s markets or local grocery store
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Lemon Juice: fresh squeezed lemon juice is best

Tips:

  • Take 1 tbsp at a time and repeat every couple of hours when you are feeling sick or starting to feel a cough coming on
  • Make sure to shake the mixture every time before you use it
