Onion Tea | GIRLS WHO EAT

This immune-boosting onion tea originated in the Dominican Republic as a traditional remedy for colds and immunity support. It takes just 20 minutes to prepare and has a surprisingly pleasant taste, especially when enhanced with apple, cinnamon, and honey for a sweet and tangy flavor. For added depth, ginger or lemon can also be included. Perfect for the winter season or anytime immune support is needed, this tea is a simple and effective way to promote wellness.

For this recipe, you will need:

  • Red Onion: you want to use a red onion since it has the antioxidant quercetin, which is great for it’s anti-inflammatory properties and immune boosting
  • Water
  • Apple
  • Cinnamon
  • Honey: I always use raw honey
  • Add-ins such as sliced ginger and lemon juice (optional)

Tips:

  • Leave the onion skin on
  • Any apples will do, but ideally a sweeter variety like honeycrisp or gala

Ingredients

  • 1 large organic red onions, quartered with skin left on
  • 4-5 cups water
  • 1/2 apple, cubed (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)
  • 1/2 tbsp honey, or to taste
  • Additional add ins: sliced ginger, lemon squeeze (½ tbsp), 1-2 garlic cloves, celery

Instructions

  • Rinse the onions and leave the skin on. Cut the ends off the onion and then cut the onion into 4 quarters. Cut the apple into cubes. Place onions, apples, and cinnamon in a medium pot and cover with the water. Bring the water to a boil over medium heat.
  • Once the water starts boiling, reduce heat to low and let the onion tea simmer for 15-20 minutes. Onions should be cooked through and apples should be soft.
  • Strain liquid with a strainer to remove the large pieces of onion and apples.
  • Add the tea to a cup and add in your honey. Mix and ENJOY!
